Would you like to write for the Journal?
We are looking for articles which will be of interest to practising
teachers of English. This clearly includes a very wide range of
topics, such as
- Practical classroom issues (classroom management, discipline,
use of L1, etc)
- Teaching materials and resources, including new technology
and how it can be of use to teachers (using the internet, email,
video, etc)
- Ideas for types of lessons or tasks (dealing with listening,
using literature, designing tests, etc)
- Language issues - analysis of language and teaching ideas
- Issues to do with teachers' personal and professional development
(observation, classroom research, courses, other experiences,
etc)
- Background issues to teaching and learning (motivation, assessment,
etc)
Length and format
Articles can be long or short. Aim for between 5000 and 12000
characters (with spaces included in the count).
You should write your article in Word but please keep formatting
as simple as possible.
It is often a good idea to include visuals or diagrams. (The Journal
is printed in black and white so colour photos are not appropriate.)
However, please put diagrams or visuals in a separate document.
Indicate in the body of the text where they should appear. Illustrations
should be about 500 characters per picture.
Tips for writers
Audience
The Journal is mainly directed at Portuguese state school teachers
of English, teaching children and young adults from 10 to 18.
However, it is also read by teachers working in private language
institutes, universities and primary schools.
It is a magazine for teachers, not academics. Many of the readers
are not native speakers of English. You should therefore aim to
present your ideas clearly and simply, and make it as accessible
as possible to the reader, avoiding too much 'jargon'. (If you
do use technical terms or acronyms please explain them).
Please bear your readers in mind when you are writing your article.
Organisation
This depends on the type of article. Particularly if it is a long
article, please use headings throughout the text. This will make
your article easier to follow.
If you are presenting a teaching idea, use a 'recipe' format (i.e.
listing what you need for the lesson and then numbering the stages).
